Patient Resources

We welcome you as a patient to Southwest Eye Clinics. The information below explains what to expect before, during, and after your visit to our Mesquite office.

Your pupils may be dilated with eye drops during the exam. Dilating drops can blur your vision, especially for reading, for several hours. Dilation is almost always performed for patients seeing our retina specialists. Please call ahead or ask at check-in if you are unsure whether your pupils will be dilated.

Because of dilating drops and bright lights used during the exam, your vision may be blurry when you finish the examination. We strongly recommend that you arrange for someone to drive you home after your appointment.

Please allow enough time so our doctors can complete your exam and any testing or treatment you may need.

  • New patient visits for the retina doctors take at least two hours. For the other eye doctors, this may be somewhat less. Sometimes, additional testing or even treatments are required which would lengthen your expected stay in the office.
  • Follow up visits and postoperative visits usually last between one to one and a half hours.
  • Due to the unpredictable nature in caring for patients, please allow additional time for possible delay. It is very important to us to give every patient the care that they need even if it delays the schedule.

Please remember to bring the following items as needed:

  • Referral from primary doctor if necessary
  • Co-pay
  • Insurance card
  • List of current medications
  • Any information that your doctor may have given you such as laboratory tests or handwritten description

Patient Forms

The following forms can be downloaded, saved, and printed at home. Completing them before your visit helps shorten check-in time. Bring the printed forms with your current insurance information. If a question is unclear, complete what you can and our staff will help you on the day of your appointment.

When to Seek Urgent Care

Some retina symptoms need same-day evaluation. Contact your referring doctor or our office promptly if you notice a sudden increase in floaters, new flashes of light, a curtain or shadow across your vision, or a rapid loss of central or peripheral sight. Retinal detachment and some forms of bleeding inside the eye are time-sensitive. If you cannot reach our office and your symptoms are worsening, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. For routine scheduling or non-urgent questions, call Contact Us at 214-501-5426 or 214-501-KHAN.

For this reason, anyone experiencing symptoms or warning signs of the disease should seek emergency care as soon as possible. In many cases, retinal detachment occurs without any underlying cause.
